Types of Foam Filled Fender

Portable foam filled fenders

Without nets (only the fender body), usually smaller in size.

Flanged foam filled fenders

Can be equipped with chain nets, chain nets with tires, or without nets, usually used for larger sizes. We can supply foam fenders fitted with chain & tyre net. This will offer additional protection of the coating (outer layer) and foam core.

The foam filled fenders are constructed of three parts each providing an important function in the construction and lifespan of the fender.

The three parts are (1) The closed cell polyurethane foam. (2) Outer nylon cord fabrics. (3) Polyurea spraying coat.

The closed cell polyurethane foam

The closed-cell EVA foam core used inside offers un-sink ability during operation. The energy-absorbing foam core of our foam-filled fender shall be heat-laminated. Chipped or granulated particulate foam, as well as adhesives to bond the foam together, are not acceptable. Also, our foam core is 100% closed-cell foam. Each closed cell is completely enclosed, which prevents it from compressing or settling over time.

 

Outer Polyurethane Protective Layer + Nylon Cord Fabrics

Specifically designed to seal EVA foam inside and prevent any leakage.The outer nylon cord fabrics is specifically designed to seal polyurethane foam inside ability during operation. The outer skin of our foam-filled fender is constructed of elastomer with filament reinforcing as specified. The polyurethane skin is reinforced with nylon 6 for extra strength. The reinforced skin’s tensile strength can reach 31Mpa, with tear strength around 78.8kN/m. The skin is thick enough to provide enough nylon wraps. They transfer shear forces from berthing and the rated reaction force.

 

Polyurea Spraying Coating

Permanent spray-on coatings that protect the surface of the fender body. It is more durable than rubber and flexible in all weather conditions; with no softening in heat or becoming brittle in cold. Spraying polyurea can make them tough. It makes them resist chemicals, weather, and damage. It also keeps them flexible in extreme temperatures.

Process of Foam Filled Fender

 

 

Foam fenders are produced using a fender building machine to construct a foam core on top of a metal mandrel. A resilient PE closed-cell foam strip or sheet is used as the main energy absorbing component of foam fenders. By applying heat, these foam strips or sheets are laminated together to form a one-piece integral structure.

The use of this foam filled construction process makes the fender unsinkable and able to function even if punctured.

The outer layer, which covers the foam core, is constructed through a spraying process which uses a special synthetic polyurethane or polyurea elastomer. This layer is reinforced with nylon tire cord filaments during spraying process.

Multiple layers of continuous nylon filament reinforcements are applied, using a filament winding machine, to produce a high strength reinforced coating. The filament winding process produces a fender skin that has reinforcing fibres oriented in the optimal direction for maximum strength. Due to continuous filament winding, local loadings are distributed over a wide area of fender surface, minimizing stresses in the fender skin and increasing its tensile strength.
