Cylindrical Fender is commonly used for all applications, bulk cargo berths, fishing and workboat berths, general cargo quays, pontoons and floating structures, roro and ferry terminals, tugboats and havens, etc. It is well capable of absorbing forces and loads and easy to install and maintain.

Cylindrical fenders feature a hollow circular cross-section, offering excellent resilience and durability. They are primarily deployed on quay walls, general cargo berths, tugboats, and bow/stern protection. Depending on the size and structure, three primary fixing methods are applied:

Chain Suspension (for large diameters): Supported by a central steel bar and suspended by chains to allow the fender to float and roll with the vessel's movement.

U-Anchors & Brackets (for medium diameters): Fixed tightly against the quay wall using heavy-duty brackets on both ends.

Longitudinal Bars (for small diameters): Mounted onto the hull or dock using an internal flat bar, common for tugboats and workboats.

Q1: How do I choose the right ratio between the Outer Diameter (OD) and Inner Diameter (ID)?

A1: The standard ratio is typically ID= 0.5×OD. A thicker wall( smaller ID) increases the stiffness and reaction force, providing higher energy absorption for heavier vessels, while a thinner wall offers a softer cushioning effect.

 

Q2: Why are Cylindrical Fenders still preferred over newer designs like Cone or Cell Fenders for general cargo berths?

A2: While Cone and Cell fenders offer higher energy-to-reaction ratios, Cylindrical fenders excel in versatility and cost-efficiency. They can easily accommodate vessels of vastly different sizes and are much easier to install and maintain, making them highly economical for multi-purpose docks.

 

Q3: Can Cylindrical Fenders be installed on a curved quay or a tugboat bow?

A3: Yes. Small to medium-sized cylindrical fenders can be pre-curved or naturally bent to fit the profile of a tug's bow or a curved dolphin. For sharp radii, we recommend factory-pre-curved sections to avoid excessive internal stress.
